B.E.L.’s Online Payment System Down, Until Further Notice
The Belize Electricity Limited is now working to restore its online services. Following the cyber attack, key pieces of hardware for its online server were damaged. As a result, customers are no longer able to pay their bills online. Additionally, the Belize Water Services Limited has abruptly terminated its Joint-Utility Agreement with B.E.L. As a result, B.E.L. customers will no longer be able to pay their bills at a nearby B.W.S. office.
John Mencias, Chief Executive Officer, Belize Electricity Limited
“We had a couple of our hard disks on our server that was damaged and these affected the provision of services to customers, especially and even internally over the week and that is unfortunate that happened. And so you will see that tomorrow, because we are unable to provide services online at the moment, and unfortunate to BWS suddenly terminated the joint partnership we had with them. They had indicated from before that they would want the partnership to come to an end in August. But we were suddenly informed that it has come to an end and they have been one of our major collection agents. WE are taking action to get other collection agents and we have at our cooperate headquarters we are using both our cashiering service inside and outside the tent. But we are doing something we never done in many years, we are opening our office for collection. This is a temporary measure until we are able to get pass this. We are convinced that online is more efficient, it is where the world is going and we will continue to proceed in that direction.”
