Investments in Regional Sporting Tournament Hosted in Belize
…from volleyball and football to basketball. For the first time in Belize’s history, FIBA U-seventeen Centrobasket Championship 2023 will be held in Belize. The junior regional basketball team competition takes place at the Belize City Civic Center from July twenty-fourth to the thirtieth. When we spoke to President of the Belize Basketball Federation Jacob Leslie back in June, he spoke of the need for financial support to host the tournament. Today, Sports Minister Rodwell Ferguson confirmed that monies will be invested in that basketball competition, as well as the upcoming CODICADER Games also to be hosted in Belize.
Rodwell Ferguson, Minister of Sports
“I am very agitated when I go to cabinet and cabinet recognise that sports for young people is a must and it is important. So I was able to get cabinet to contribute a hundred and fifty thousand, almost two hundred thousand to the under-seventeen basketball and an entire budget for CODICADER. We also visited the utility company and each one contributed a hundred and fifty to CODICADER so we were able to find the funds for the under-seventeen basketball and likewise CODICADER. Sometimes you want to hear negative news, but nobody asked me when I became the president of CONSECADE what is my role and my position. And I am also the vice president of the entire Americas, one of the vice presidents, and with that opportunity that I got, I will do everything to raise funds not only for Belize, but for the entire region and you will see a complete difference in sports in the region.”
