Public Utilities Minister Weighs in on B.E.L. Cyber Attack
Belize Electricity Limited is the victim of a cyber attack that took place recently when its fileservers were hacked and data from those machines was leaked to the dark web. It’s a serious concern for the Government of Belize and today, when we caught up with the Minister of Public Utilities, we inquired about the situation and what is being done to combat these cyber security threats.
Isani Cayetano
“Fairly recently, Belize Electricity Limited was hacked in a cyber attack. As a minister, how do you weigh in on this and what are some of the primary concerns that you have, looking at a situation such as this?”
Michel Chebat, Minister of Public Utilities
“Obviously, it‘s very concerning because BEL is one of our foremost corporations in this country, but it could happen to anyone and certainly from a national security point of view, it causes us great concerns. Now here at the ministry, while we do not carry cyber security per se, we are also cooperating with the Ministry of National Security to develop a cyber security framework for Belize and it is something that is urgently needed.”
