Alleged Leader of Southside Gang Arraigned
Today, thirty-one-year-old Alexander Underwood was arraigned inside the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on a single charge of being a member of a gang. Allegations against Underwood are that he is a member of the Southside Gang (SSG) and has engaged in committing serious offenses. Underwood appeared before a Senior Magistrate where he pled not guilty. Underwood told the court that this is the second time that he has been charged with the same offense. When the Senior Magistrate inquired about the status of that case, he said the charge was withdrawn. Despite what Underwood said in court, the Senior Magistrate told him that the court cannot grant bail for the offense he is charged with until ninety days. However, Underwood has the right to apply to the Supreme Court for bail with the help of an attorney. He was remanded into custody at the Belize Central Prison until September sixteenth, 2023. Outside of the courtroom, Underwood’s relatives told Court Reporter, Anita Nembhard the he is being wrongfully accused, as he is not a member of any gang. The family claims that Underwood is now a family man with two children and has proven that he has changed from the old ways that once had him in and out of the police station. They further claim that Underwood is a subcontractor with Cisco’s Construction and that he is working with the Conscious Youth Development Program and with the youths of the area to keep them off the streets. They also say that he is the owner of Port Loyola Football Club. On the other hand, Police say Underwood is the leader of SSG. Underwood was represented by Richard “Dickie” Bradley in court.
