18 Years Later, Bottom Dollar Goes Out of Business
Another iconic business in downtown Belize City will be closing its doors permanently in a few short weeks. It was announced earlier today that Bottom Dollar Supermarket is going out of business on August thirty-first, after eighteen years of service to the Belizean public. The company, a subsidiary of Santiago Castillo Limited, attributes its pending closure to unfair competition. This, according to the release, was, “compounded with proposed changes in market conditions which will exacerbate the current situation”. As a result, the owners have taken a decision to shutter Bottom Dollar and focus their attention on other concerns. Employees of that establishment will transition into other areas of the group of companies. Bottom Dollar is the second store in the commercial heart of the Old Capital to become defunct in less than two months. In July, Augusto Quan also closed its doors for good, after eighty-three years in business.
