Henry Charles Usher, Area Representative, Fort George
“On behalf of the prime minister, Honorable John Briceño and the government and people of Belize, especially his beloved residents of Lake Independence, I offer my condolences as we stand in solidarity with the family, friends and contemporaries of Carlos Diaz. His neighbours will certainly remember him fondly as will we in the People’s United Party. We have lost a soldier of the revolution; a man who understood the value of service to others and who loved Belize. Carlos represented the people of this community as neighbour, as leader, as minister of government and a local businessman. For sure, here in Lake I, Carlos and by extension his family – especially his late wife – left an indelible mark on the hearts of those he served. A mentor and friend to many, Carlos lived and died as a humble man whose service to his constituents was sincere, compassionate and motivated by the desire to bring betterment for this community and our nation. While he was tall and stately, he was also serious. Yet he embodied the essence of humility. He was once a tough minded man and a complete gentleman. He could take issue without taking offence; that is rare these days. He lived in his community, among his people; right across the street from this church.”
