Belize Still Looking Good in Central American Male Volleyball Championships

The Twenty-third Central American Senior Male Volleyball Championships continue tonight at the Belize Civic Centre where Belize takes on Honduras. The home team pulled off an excellent and important victory last night against Panama in order to still have a shot at winning gold. They will have to face off with top guns to snag that spot, but coach, Albert Humes told News Five that our boys have the wherewithal to do it.

“Panama gave the first shot. We countered in the last three sets, and in the last two sets, and in the fifth set, we – I think we break them, we broke them. They get a bit fatigued and we took advantage of that and keep our level high, no? Victoria also proved that her guys are mentally strong also. To come from two, five setters, they came back on the second one to win in that fashion. It’s very impressive, you know? It shows the hard work and dedication and motivation that they have playing at home.”

“So, where does that win put us in terms of the standings for medals?”

Albert Humes

“Well, if you look at the stats, five teams are tied. Although all of us have the same amount of wins, it’s by points. So we’re in third place. We play against Honduras today. We have a rest day tomorrow. Then we play against the higher – the “bigger guns” which is Guatemala, Costa Rica and Nicaragua, Nicaragua being our last game on Saturday. Yes.”

“Do you have any outlook, any projections?”

Albert Humes

“Well, the only reason why we are playing this game is because we think – we know – we can win. So our ultimate goal to the end is to win this game. That’s the reason why, hence, last night was so ultra important that my guys bounced back from that loss.”

Belize’s loss was to El Salvador on opening night on Sunday.
