Business Closures “A Sign of the Time”, Says U.D.P. Chairman
U.D.P. Chairman, Michael Peyrefitte, also spoke on the recent closure of Augusto Quan and Bottom Dalla. He contends that it is a sign of the time, asserting that Belize’s business environment is no longer conducive to growth and fairness in commerce.
Michael Peyrefitte, Chairman, United Democratic Party
“It is a sign of the time and even if you isolate Augusto Quan and Bottom Dalla, look at Smiling Meats, there is no more PUP than Smiling, no bigger PUP than Smiling, and he is telling you, when this government came to power they were expecting things would get better under COVID and they actually got worst because of unfair competition, favoritism and just not an enabling environment for anybody to work in. There is the high cost of living, high cost of running an operation and these are big businesses that usually can absorb these shocks. So, if these businesses cannot take these shocks, these blue chip businesses cannot accept these shocks, then what about other hundreds of small businesses that have had to go out of business because of the environment we are in. It is a sign clearly of the time.”
