Shirley Roberts- Young Foundation Awards Ten New Scholarships
The Shirley Roberts- Young Foundation for Sports and Education (S.R.Y. Foundation) will be awarding its second cohort of scholarship recipients on Saturday. In 2022 the foundation provided scholarships to twenty-two students. This year, the foundation will be adding ten more scholarship recipients to its program. Apart from their school fees being paid in full, the beneficiaries receive financing for textbooks, uniforms, laptops, school bag supplies, toiletries and a list of other items. Gerald Binder, the President of S.R.Y. Foundation, told us that the recipients were selected from over one hundred applications and based on their academic performance and financial need.

“My wife is from Belize and she has very strong ties to Belize. And, her mom passed away, Shirley Roberts Young who we are named after, mom’s passed away quite young so Shirley Roberts Young had to raise children and kind of everything rather than go school and my wife knew this and it was her desire to be able to provide opportunities for, particularly young women to go to school and get the education that her mom never had the chance to get. We provide as part of our scholarship, laptop computers, new dell laptop computers which we purchase and printers for the students to be able to use. For those who don’t have internet access we provide that. We pay their school fees, buy them uniforms, we buy their books, supplies, family living necessities kind of things to be able to feel better about themselves and be able to develop as young individuals such as toiletries for example. This is all part of our scholarship award and we are celebrating these ten new students that are going to enter the program this Saturday.”
