Nelma Mortis-Jones Steps Up for U.D.P.
The United Democratic Party is yet to formally introduce its mayoral candidate for Belize City. She is Doctor Nelma Mortis-Jones. For the better part of thirty years, she has been involved in education, Mortis-Jones has also been involved in the social sector. She is offering herself in a race that is dominated by men.

“Entering as a woman, I believe leadership, effective leadership is not immune to either males or females. It is what we bring to the table, in terms of our skills, our tenacity, our passion and by merit, what we have to offer around the table, in terms of discussing the issues that affect us. For over thirty years I have been serving my people, serving the people of Belize in different capacities, not only in education but in the social landscape too. I have done a lot of work and presently I am working on some social development projects. So it is from that end that I choose to now walk in this step, a different career path which is the political path and I know it won’t be an easy road because it’s a battlefield, it’s a man’s world. But I have prepared myself and I am confident that we can do it. The mandate of the city council is basically focused on infrastructure development. While that is in and of itself, I think a lot of time what we don’t do is let our, while we do not stray from our mission, we have to evolve in terms of what we are faced with. Any organization is influenced by its external environment. Belize City, in and of itself, began under, and I must admit, it began Mayor Bradley, where he has done a lot in terms of infrastructure. One thing that I know that I have admired greatly of him is the accountability part, not to say that the present mayor has not continued along that road. I must also state that when I heard him recently speaking about a smart city that too is something that I would commend. But adding to that, I want to look at inclusivity of the human element, the human people. What’s the use of having all this infrastructure when we cannot enjoy it, we don’t have a safe and secure Belize City.”
