Dwayne Sutherland Charged with Attempted Murder of Two Elders

Dwayne Sutherland

Twenty-three-year-old Dwayne Sutherland Junior, also known as Dwayne Anthony, the son of Superintendent of Police, Dwayne Sutherland Senior, has been charged with two counts of attempted murder. The charges stem from an incident in Lemonal Village on Saturday evening, in which Sutherland is accused of stabbing his grandfather, Tony Anthony and his grand-uncle, Russell Anthony. In addition to the two counts of attempted murder, Sutherland, who appeared unrepresented before a senior magistrate, was read four other charges, including two counts of use of deadly means of harm, one count of threatening behaviour and one count of wounding upon Tony Anthony. Corporal Herbert Banner, who was nearby when the stabbing happened, reported to police that several men were drinking alcoholic beverages after a cricket match in the village and that’s when he saw Sutherland and his grandfather and grand-uncle having an altercation. Banner reported that when he saw Sutherland take out a knife and attacked his elders, he took out his service pistol and fired two warning shots, subdued Sutherland and detained him. Police later found a small knife on the far left side of the main road that they believe to be the weapon used. Due to the nature of the offenses, bail was denied and Sutherland Junior was remanded into custody at the Belize Central Prison until October thirty-first. Sutherland, however, was already out on a previous bail for a gun charge from April, which is still pending before the court.
