“Tangle Wood”, a Carl Gordon Sculpture Exhibit
Carl Gordon has dedicated the last forty-five years of his life to creating wooden sculptors. On Thursday night, the Bliss Center for the Performing Arts will be opening a new sculpture exhibit featuring fifteen of Gordon’s masterpieces. The exhibit is called “Tangle Wood” and it will be open for visitors through to the eighth of September. Gordon is considered one of Belize’s leading sculptors and has been named the recipient of this year’s Belize @42 George Gabb Award for Visual Art by the National Celebrations Commission. We stopped by the Bliss earlier today to speak with Gordon.

“My motivation like I said, I love looking in the clouds. The formation of clouds, when I am outside I can, especially in the morning times when I go jogging, I can formulate a lot of things in mind, and it is vast. I look at that as my classroom, almighty is my teacher. That is the way he shows all these things to me. I refer to that as black struggle, cause this woman that I knew, I can’t remember her name but I saw her and she was like some sort of inspiration to me, she only had one leg and the family she had to feed washer granddaughter children. She fed them every day and I would see that lady usually pass by my area there every day with produce on her head, the crutch under her arm, because she only had one leg and everyday she went out to do that religiously, and she is happy doing it. Sometimes she is be humming doing songs and I said she is amazing. I looked at her features’ every time she passes by and I had the opportunity to get a piece of wood and that was the first thing I thought about. The inspiration of that piece when I thought about it is emancipation, the name of the piece is emancipation from slavery, it is like freedom. When I look at it and thought about it, I saw that image in the clouds. I literally aw a woman on her knees one day when I was walking. I formulated that in my mind and saw that and I looked at it for a while and I looked away to make sure that really wasn’t what I was seeing and when I turned back it is like yeah even more it revealed itself to me.”
