Area Rep Rodwell Ferguson on Land Scandal

On Wednesday, the name of a real estate company in southern Belize was referenced in a recording made by businessman Ricardo Borja ahead of his execution. In the leaked audio, which has now been removed from the YouTube channel, Borja revealed details of a sophisticated land fraud scheme. He also spoke of the involvement of several employees at the Lands Department, famously dubbed as a hotbed of corruption.  When we caught up with Stann Creek West area representative Rodwell Ferguson, he was asked about a piece of land in Santa Cruz Village. Minister Ferguson says to check with the Minister of Natural Resources.

“I met him once, when we won the election in 2020. There was a contention with piece of land in Santa Cruz because I wanted it to go back to the community. That was the only time I met this gentleman [bleep]. I neva even met him after that.”

“…land he was claiming.”

“I am not the minister of lands.”

“But you are the area rep…”

“I am not the Minister of Lands so that question you ask the minister of lands. I don’t want to comment; it’s not my ministry.”
