Unveiling a Queen of the Bay Plaque at Memorial Park

Today, the decades-long tradition of the Queen of the Bay pageant was etched on the walls at the Memorial Park in Belize City.  It has always been said that the names of the national pageant winners become part of the country’s history. The names of seventy-seven titleholders are engraved on a plaque that is now adorned on a wall at the park, where the coronation ceremony for most occurred. Former titleholders and delegates for the upcoming pageant gathered this afternoon for the unveiling of the plaque. President Sherima Guity, a former national Queen of the Bay says that it is about honouring the unbroken history.

“We want a place that we can call home to Queen of the Bay. We actually had a vote in our group chat and it was between three different places and of course the memorial park came in on top. Why? Because most of our queens have the memory of being crowned here at this very location. From the time I won in 2004, I know that I was a part of history; I was proud to be a part of history, but I couldn’t go anywhere to see my name on that wall. We brought it to the committee, the association of former queens, which includes many of the queens who live abroad and of course who live here in Belize, all pitched in to ensure that we could have made this plaque possible this year.  We are so proud; it is made of granite and stainless steel so it is going to be here for years to come and that is something that we are very proud of. Queen of the Bay is an emblem of freedom; it is something that our Belizean people look forward to each year and we have an unbroken line when it comes to Queen of the Bay. That means that every year, even in hurricane, COVID, we pull off a Queen of the Bay pageant. COVID was the toughest; it really had us look at the pageant from a different perspective, but we understand that we are hope to the Belizean people. And even with that, now we are giving back. The pageant is on August twenty-sixth, this Saturday, at Belize Civic Center. It is going to be the best Queen of the Bay pageant in history.”
