Supplies Control Unit on the Ground to Monitor Grocery Prices

Lennox Nicholson

When we asked Lennox Nicholson, the Controller of Supplies, at the Ministry of Agriculture, about the steps following the enactment of the new S.I., he informed us that there is ground work that has to be done before fully enforcing the law. He says this will include informing retailers of the new parameters and getting their feedback on how the approach can be improved.

“The SI has already been gazette but with these matters there is ground work you have to do. You always have to get your bearing because what you need to establish is that if there is gouging you need to establish whether that is being done at the importation stage, the wholesale stage or the retail stage and one of the things you must do is to ensure that the people you are regulating know what the parameters are and what is expecting of them, that is why my officers are going through that walk through process with members of the Chinese association so that they can filter that information to their members as well as provide us feedback if they identify means and ways through which the regulation may be improved they can communicate it to us and these walkthroughs and visits will not only be confirmed to the Chinese association but other establishments as well that are involved in the wholesale and retail of goods, but the emphasis at this stage is on the retail end and we will work our way back.”
