Two Orange Walk cops charged with Handling Stolen Goods…
Two police officers attached to the Orange Walk Branch are tonight in trouble with the law. That’s because Private Constables Roman Canul and Enrique Bacab were both charged on Monday with Handling Stolen Goods in respect of two burglaries in June and October of this year. According to Superintendent Miguel Guzman of the Corozal Police, the Bethesda Clinic reported several items had been stolen from them including a meter saw valued at two thousand nine hundred and forty three dollars. But while some of the items were recovered and several culprits charged for burglary, Guzman says that the saw was later recovered from a man in Orange Walk Town who accused the two officers of selling him the saw. And how did the officers come in possession of the saw? Well Guzman says that it is believed the bad cops took the saw from the original burglars at a police checkpoint.

“Were these officers part of the burglary?”

“Not necessarily; from our investigations, there was a person who was transporting these stolen items from Corozal to the direction of Orange Walk town when they were intercepted by these two officers at a checkpoint. The officers took possession of this particular item and eventually disposed of it for the purpose of gaining some financial benefit for themselves.”

“So instead if them reporting this to—or taking in a report of this to the police department they actually went and sold it.”

“Basically that is the information that we have so far.”

“What is expected to happen if they are found guilty of a crime of this sort?”

“Well, once you bring any sort of disrepute to the police department—because remember we play a key role in the community. We are officers that should have integrity and once you bring that integrity into question then you no longer are fit to be a member of this department. Basically, that is it. the integrity of the department is of paramount importance in all cases and in this particular case, once an officer is convicted of any wrongdoings of this magnitude then that person does not deserve to be a member of the police department.”
According to Inspector Selvin Tillett of the Orange Walk Police, the two officers have not been interdicted.
