Opposition Says, “Too Many Guns in this Town”

The recent gang-related murder in Belize City, as well as the flood of illegal firearms into the country, remain an area of serious concern for the opposition.  In maintaining its call for the removal of the Minister of Home Affairs, his Chief Executive Officer and the Commissioner of Police, party chairman Michael Peyrefitte says that the matter has only gotten worse, pointing to the number of firearm licenses that were issued to deceased businessman Ricardo Borja during a period seventeen months.

“Since we’ve been calling for it, it hasn’t gotten better.  Since we’ve been calling for it, it has only gotten worse and now we have not only a crime situation where too many guns [are] in this town.  We’re learning that people who are being executed got ten gun licenses in seventeen months.  I mean, there is a sense of lawlessness and only those who have the means to get what they want can get what they want.  We see robberies that have become more and more brazen, we see the demoralization of the police department that’s just on another level low.  And it doesn’t seem that there is anything in sight that will change it or that will make it better.  Sometimes, when you’re in situations like this, you have to change leadership and we knew it would get worse and we knew it wouldn’t get better.  We knew that Minister Musa and Kevin Arthurs are out of their tree.  Dehn noh mek fi this, dehn noh build fi this.  Dehn noh qualify fi this.”
