Toledo Alcaldes Association says SI will be set aside
Also in Punta Gorda, there is a development to a story that we aired in our newscast last night, in respect of a Statutory Instrument recently signed off by the Attorney General which would have displaced the alcaldes elected by the Maya leaders and community in favour of government appointed alcaldes. According to the Toledo Alcaldes Association, in a release today, the SI will now be set aside. This follows a meeting between the Toledo Alcaldes Association, the Santa Elena Village Chairman, Maya Leaders Alliance and Minister of State Juan Coc. The Santa Elena villagers will now elect their alcaldes on February eighth and the election will be monitored by the stakeholders involved. In regards to other villages, sixty-eight alcaldes representing the Mopan and Qeqchi’ communities were sworn in on January thirty-first.
