Minister Musa Says No Need to Investigate ComPol For Gun Licenses to Borja
Minister of Home Affairs, Kareem Musa says he does not see a need to have the Commissioner of Police investigated for issuing up to ten gun licenses to Ricardo Borja. He says there is no limit to how many gun licenses the Commissioner of Police can issue to a single individual under the current system. But, as we have reported, the duties of ComPol Williams, where the issuance of gun licenses are concerned, will be handed over to a gun control board. Minister Musa says he believes the board should place a limit on the number of gun licenses an individual can obtain.
Kareem Musa, Minister of Home Affairs
“Currently under the gun license regime that exists, there is no limit and so I am certain this commissioner is not the first to have issued a multitude of license to a particular individual. I am certain other commissioners in the past have done so. So there is no intention to investigate that. What we are doing moving forward is implementing this new board. That is something we committed to months ago. We have taken it for first reading and that is in our opinion will be passed at the next sitting of the House of Representatives. So, there is gun license reform we are doing. I don’t see the need for an investigation. Like I said it is in the remit of anybody who holds the title of commissioner of police in their discretion to issue licenses. That is something we are reforming and having a board consider that and in my humble opinion a board should decide on a limit on the number of license that should be issued.”
