Grenade Found in Belmopan
The fatal stabbing in Belmopan was not the only crime-related news that unfolded over the weekend in the Garden City. Police, on Saturday evening, also discovered a hand grenade in the nation’s capital. This evening, Belize Police Department informed that an operation was conducted in the Belmopan cemetery on Nicaragua Street in the Salvapan area and found a yellow plastic bag. Inside that bag was a foam plate that contained the grenade. Police called in a Belize Defense Force bomb expert, who inspected the grenade, and determined that it was a British-manufactured K400 fragmentation live-hand grenade. It has not been confirmed where exactly the grenade originated, but viewers will recall that in January of 2010, more than thirteen years ago, the British Army Training Support Unit Belize, BATSUB, began an investigation into a batch of missing hand grenades from its stock. This was after a grenade blast had claimed the life of a teen back then. That grenade was one of six that was traced to the British Forces supply. The grenade found on Saturday was handed over to the Belize Defense Force and police are investigating.
