Minister Mai: El Salvador Serious About Importing Grain from Belize

Jose Abelardo Mai

The two countries plan to begin trading before the year ends, however, there is all the red tape that must be dealt with, and then of course, the supply and demand factor. Minister Mai explained that at present, Minister of Foreign Trade, Eamon Courtenay is about to draft the partial scope agreement that will govern how Belize and El Salvador conduct trade. And even with the challenges that trade brings, El Salvador is serious about importing our grains.

Jose Abelardo Mai, Minister of Agriculture

“Look, no trade of any quality occurs easily within countries. There’s always the matter to deal with plant health, the regulations in place, the tariffs in place, the trade agreements in place. And as we speak right now, Minister Courtenay and his team are preparing for the partial scope agreement with El Salvador. So there are many things that need to be looked at in terms of trade. But we are hopeful. El Salvador is very serious. They are importing country of food and food stuffs, and so they are seriously looking at the lead supplying some of their needs.”
