El Salvador Looks to Belize for Grain

El Salvador’s Minister of Agriculture, Oscar Enrique Guardado and a technical team have wrapped up a two-day visit to Belize, where they toured selected farms. The purpose of the trip was to explore the possibility of Belize providing that Central American neighbor with produce that they consume on a daily basis. It is all part of a bilateral trade arrangement between Belize and El Salvador that will include a technical cooperation agreement enabling technical teams from both countries to reciprocate training sessions. Today, Minister of Agriculture, Jose Abelardo Mai told the media that there are two potential products that Belize will provide to El Salvador in the form of grain.

“They have identified two important commodities that they consume daily: small red beans and white corn. But they needed to come to Belize to confirm that these commodities are available in the quantities that they want. We do not have in the quantities the red beans. They have right now the seed, but they want us to produce seed material for them and to do commercial production of this beans and white corn. They also have a special variety of white corn that they consume and that they want us to produce.”
