Justice Denys Barrow to replace Justice Boyd Carey?

We have reported recently on the most unusual impasse between the Attorney General and the Judiciary. The Prime Minister for the most part appears to agree with the stance taken by the A.G. on many issues that have irked the judiciary. Today, we came across another report, this time involving the judges of the Court of Appeal. It goes back to August when the Prime Minister’s brother Denys Barrow was appointed as a judge of the Court of Appeal. The office of the Prime Minister issued a release dated August tenth stating that Justice Barrow was being appointed to replace Justice Boyd Carey, a Jamaican national, who was retiring at the close of this session of the Court of Appeal. That’s all in the official government’s site. Apparently, Justice Carey’s instrument of appointment was not checked and word was simply put out that he was retiring at the end of the year. The matter seems to have become increasingly embarrassing as no one has officially informed Justice Carey. We have been unable to confirm since no one is talking today, but Justice Carey’s appointment is apparently open-ended leaving it to him to decide when to retire. We will see how this develops.
