Minister Chebat: Electric Bus Pilot Project Will Run in Belize City and Cross-district

With the advent of electric buses come other kinds of electric vehicles. Its part and parcel of the global initiative promoted at the Conference of the Parties or COP Conferences on climate change to shift to a more environmentally friendly method of getting around. It’s all in an effort to slow down the rate of carbon gas emissions and to protect what’s left of the ozone layer. Belize has its own electric mobility project underway that is sponsored by the E.U., to introduce electric buses in the commercial transportation sector. The Minister of Energy, Michel Chebat explained how this project will work when it comes on stream.

“The electric mobility project is being sponsored through the European Union again, and it is being managed by the United Nations Development Project. And it is an important project because what it seeks to do is to introduce electric buses for the first time into our country. We have two pilot projects we’re going to be doing. One is going to be for Belize City, for the intercity runs, and the next one is going to be an intra-district run that will run. At this time, we’re looking at from Corozal to Benque Viejo. So, it is important because it helps us to achieve some of the international commitments we’ve made, especially in terms of the reduction of carbon emissions. So this is an important project, and we’re hoping that as time goes by, people are going to see the benefit of using electric vehicles, and perhaps lessen our dependency on fossil fuels.”
