Inmate freed of murder after two years behind bars

After spending more than two years behind bars awaiting his trial, a man is with his family tonight after a jury found him not guilty of Murder. Eric Castillo was acquitted less than two hours after a jury of twelve retired to deliberate his fate late Wednesday evening. The incident occurred in June of 2007 when the victim, Nelson Castellanos, who was detained twice, later ended up dead in police custody. Eric Castillo was also detained at the time. He had pleaded not guilty to Murder and the alternative, Manslaughter. So who killed Castellanos Doctor Mario Estradabran who conducted a post-mortem testified that Castellanos died from massive blows to the chest that could have been caused by a number of items. Castellanos’ badly beaten body was found in the cellblock at the Orange Walk Police Station around one on the morning of June sixteenth, 2007. The main witness for the Crown was another detainee who said he never saw Castillo punch Castellanos, only push him.
