ComPol Says CompStat Figures Speaks to His Effectiveness

As we reported on Wednesday night, the Belize Police Department presented its computer statistics, which show that major crimes, including murders, are down throughout the country. So, for a department that has been able to realize this achievement, at least in the first nine months of the year, it speaks to the leadership of that department. It’s no secret that the Commissioner of Police, Chester Williams has come under heavy fire, from the Opposition, from people who just cast aspersions, and from other police officers who want him gone. So when he was asked what the statistical figures mean to him as commissioner, he said the numbers speak to his performance and effectiveness as head of the Belize Police Department, a position for which he feels he still has the support of the government.

“It certainly refutes the assertion made by some that I have become ineffective. As the Commissioner, I know I have a job to do and every day I come to work and I do that job. Yes, I know that there are some who wish to see me leave and may be waiting to take over, if or when that time comes. But people must learn to wait their turn. It’s as simple as that. I am not being forced out of the post of commissioner. I believe I enjoy the confidence of the prime minister as well as my minister and maybe even by extension the entire cabinet. And my duty as commissioner is to make sure that I do as best as I can to keep the people of this country safe, as well as those who visit. And so long as I sit in the seat of Commissioner of Police, I’m going to do my best to make this country safer for everybody who lives here and who visits.”
