Mexicans Charged with Theft of Two Rental Vehicles

A pair of Mexican men appeared in the Magistrate’s Court today to face charges of theft and abetment to theft of two rental vehicles belonging to Budget Auto-Rental Car. Twenty-eight-year-old Alejandro Gonzalez is charged with theft and thirty-eight-year-old Carlos Morales is charged with abetment to theft. Both men, who claim they’re businessmen in Mexico, are accused of stealing a 2020 white four-door Kia Sorento and a 2022 white four-door Equinox, each valued at sixty thousand dollars. Because they are considered flight risks, they were remanded to the Belize Central Prison. Allegations are that on July twenty-first, Gonzalez dishonestly appropriated the Kia Sorento and the following day, dishonesty appropriated the Equinox. Morales is accused of purposely aiding Gonzalez in the commission of the crime. Prosecutor in the case, Sergeant Kennard Clark asked that a plea not be taken from the two accused men, as he is awaiting directives from his superior on whether or not the matter will be tried on indictment or summarily, due to the amount being over fifty thousand dollars. In light of that, the court did not take a plea. The prosecutor also objected to bail since the men are Mexican and are considered a flight risk. When Morales heard he would be remanded, he told the court he wanted to plead guilty to the charges, but the magistrate informed him that the plea could not be accepted since no plea was taken in the first place. They have been remand until October twenty-third.
