Toledo West Area Rep Chimes in on Land Dispute

In an interview on Thursday at the launch of a solar project in three Maya communities in southern Belize, Toledo West Area Representative Oscar Requena fielded questions from the media. One hot-button issue in his division is that of the land dispute between Laguna and Yemeri Grove. Requena says that a cabinet subcommittee has been set up to address the issue and to deescalate tensions.

“The cabinet has set up a subcommittee that is certainly going to engage the leaders and the people of both communities moving r. It is important that our people come to the table – that they sit, that they dialogue. I encourage everyone. We have to ensure that we deescalate the tension. We know that at times tensions run high, but we do not solve problems/issues by escalating tensions, but rather by coming to the table, sitting down, speaking respectfully to one another, discussing the issues and finding a way to build consensus for both communities in this instance.”
