New PUP Mayoral Candidate in Belmopan
Pablo Cawich is the People’s United Party’s new mayoral candidate in Belmopan. Pablo and his slate of five councilor candidates topped the polls at the PUP’s municipal convention on Sunday in the Capital City. The only councilor from the current council to secure a victory at Sunday’s convention was Sanie Cal. As we reported, Mayor Sharon Palacio announced that she would not be contesting the convention. All the other councilors that served under her did not secure enough votes to vie for office in the upcoming municipal election. We spoke with Cawich today.

“The work was spread out over many months. I constructed the slate by the end of May, early June. From the first week of June we started making visits in Belmopan, meeting some of the residents, introducing the team. It was a lot of hours put in but it paid off. I personally on my own started making visits from last year to different residents around the city. One of the things they had expressed was that they felt they did not have proper representation or a voice in City Hall. So that was one of the things that stuck in my mind and discussing that with the executive that I had formed we found it best to try and ensure we represent the city in every zone. So we looked for people from every area, the San Martin Area, May Mopan area, central, north and we looked for people that live in these particular areas, since nobody knows the problems of an area better than somebody that lives there.”
