Two PUP Municipal Conventions Held, More to Come
Two People’s United Party municipal conventions were held over the weekend. Last night, we told you about the Pablo Cawich victory over Tariq Cano for mayoral candidate in Belmopan. In Punta Gorda, Carlos Galvez was elected to serve as the P.U.P.’s mayoral candidate. He defeated three other contenders. There are suggestions that neither of those winners were their area representatives’ favorite to win. And if that is the case, then what does it say about the influence of these representatives in their communities? We asked Kareem Musa, the Area Representative for Caribbean Shores.
Kareem Musa, Area Representative, Caribbean Shores
“I do not know that as a fact. In Belmopan I didn’t see the Area Representative actually advocating, not at the Cabinet level, neither publicly, for particular candidate, nor in PG. I don’t recall seeing the area representative advocating for any particular candidate. It is a unity convention so we have all PUP representatives. At the end of the day, like a true democracy, the people of the party delegates, decides who they want to represent them. And, in both instances it speaks volumes of a very vibrant democracy, both in PG and Belmopan. I am looking forward to more conventions; we have the Belize City one coming up in November the fifth. So again, you might find the people want new candidates who are not traditionally there. That is a beautiful thing.”
