Home Affairs Minister on Gang Members Charged
Earlier this month, on October second, Tyrone, Ellis and Shaquille Meighan were acquitted of the charge of being a member of a gang due to the lack of sufficient evidence. They were accused back in February 2020 for allegedly being a member of the Ghost Town Crips. More than twenty witnesses took the stand during the trial, including police officers and prison guards. Within a week, the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution officially informed the Meighan brothers that they will be appealing the ruling. Today, Minister of Home Affairs Kareem Musa says that there are more convictions for being a member of a gang.

“It’s not good to always paint that brush right across the system. I can tell you for a fact that we have more convictions for gang charges than we do non-convictions/acquittals. And so I think you are referring to the most recent case that was publicised in the media, but certainly that does not mean that across the board we are having less convictions. We do have a majority of those cases resulting in convictions.”
