Two freed, one convicted of Drug Trafficking
Also in court, three persons were charged with Drug Trafficking of two and a half pounds of marijuana after they were busted by police with the weed in a vehicle on May twelfth, 2008. Today thirty-year old Eric Williams, who was behind the wheel of the vehicle at the time of the police search, was found guilty while forty year old Winston Estrada and his wife thirty-four year old Emma, from Caye Caulker, were freed of the charges. During the trial, the accused trio was unrepresented and they all chose to remain silent. But in mitigation, Williams asked the court for leniency saying that he has a sick mother who just came in from the states and he has to take care of her. Magistrate Kathleen Lewis imposed a non-custodial sentence in the form of a five thousand dollar fine to be paid by April fifteenth 2010.
