NEMO Advises People to Be Cautious and Vigilant over Next Few Days

Daniel Mendez

All the ferries across the Belize River in Cayo District had to be closed over the weekend, including the Baking Pot Ferry, the Xunantunich Ferry, and the Iguana Creek Bridge.  The low-lying wooden bridge also had to be closed on Sunday, as the waters continued to rise. And because the weather forecast calls for even more rain over the coming days, Mendez advises everyone, particularly persons in flood-prone areas to be alert and exercise caution, and they will continue to monitor those areas.

Daniel Mendez, National Emergency Coordinator, NEMO

“We will continue to be monitoring across the country. All our offices are on standby. All our offices are prepared to deploy if necessary. All the DEMO offices have (been or) are on alert and are prepared to provide assistance. And so, whichever district is affected, we will, of course, be sending assistance and, support to that district that is affected. But in general, we will continue to monitor it. The entire NEMO has been on standby over the weekend and we’ll continue to do so as long as necessary.  I would just want to remind everyone that we are still in the hurricane season. We still have a few weeks left. Uh, we need to continue to remain alert. Uh, we need to continue to prepare and we need to continue to ensure that we have our plans in place, that we know what to do, uh, and, and that we are ready to implement those plans if necessary. We cannot afford to be, um, to become lackadaisical.  There are still a few weeks left and things can still develop in this time.”
