NEMO Says No Emergency Rescue Needed So Far Due to Flooding
And because the rains kept on coming down over the weekend, it created flash flooding in certain areas of the country. Luckily this time, everyone seemed to have heeded the advisories that NEMO has been issuing. Many also took the necessary measures to either move out of the flood-prone areas in time, or stayed away until the waters recede. According to NEMO Coordinator, Daniel Mendez, despite the fact that the rains have been incessant since late last week, there’s been no call thus far for assistance.
Daniel Mendez, National Emergency Coordinator, NEMO
“We have been monitoring a weather system that crossed over the country over the weekend. We have been monitoring this for the past few days, in collaboration with the National Met Service and the National Hydrology Department of Belize. So we have been looking at this and really looking at how it has been impacting the country. So over the weekend, most of the impact was being felt in the Cayo District. We saw some issues of possible flooding in the area. And as a result, the district offices, NEMO district offices were supporting the District Emergency Management Organization offices, the DEMO in the Cayo District, and we were also supporting operations in the Stann Creek District, and also in the Orange Walk District, where we were supporting. We were just basically observing and keeping an eye on things and making preparations in case anything was needed. So far, we have not had to provide that kind of assistance to the public. We have been monitoring it. We were prepared, but we have not had the need to put any open any shelters and ask anyone to move and any assistance that has been provided has been very minimal.”
