Meighan Brothers’ Acquittal to be Appealed

Chester Williams

In October, the infamous Meighan brothers, Tyrone, Ellis, and Shaquille, were acquitted of being members of a gang. They were arraigned in February for being members of the Ghost Town Crips. But, during the trial, the prosecution failed to present sufficient evidence that established the siblings as members of a gang. The court found that the prosecution failed to establish a link between the defendants and a criminal offence committed by the gang. The ruling is being appealed, as explained by Police Commissioner Chester Williams, who responded to criticisms made by the Opposition.

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police
“Maybe we should ask the Opposition to prosecute them next time. Maybe they will be able to have it stick. We have to understand that. We live in a society where rule of law prevails, and every person who is charged before the court is presumed to be innocent until they are proven to be guilty. And so, we have a process. We went through the process. The court has its findings. We are not in agreement with the findings of the court, certainly, and that’s the reason why I gave instructions to the Head of Prosecution Branch to appeal the matter. We believe that the magistrate heard, respectfully. We’re going to take it to appeal and see what the court, the judge at the High Court is going to say.”
