Minister of Transport: Belize Has to Adapt to Electric Buses Soon

Rodwell Ferguson

Today the Minister of Transport, Rodwell Ferguson gave us an update on electric buses in Belize. While plans for the pilot project on the electric buses in the north, west and Belize City are well in the making, the buses arrival will mark an important milestone in the transportation industry. In addressing questions on the matter, Ferguson said that Belize will have to adapt to this global shift sooner than later. He also said that our roads are, for the most part, ready for these buses.

Rodwell Ferguson, Minister of Transport

“By 2030, there should be a significant change in the type of motor vehicles that are going to have across the world. As a matter of fact, I believe the combustion engine will soon become, um, obsolete, and will be forced to follow suit.  I just came up from Jamaica last week for a conference of renewable energy, and transportation is a key sector. Because in Belize, 46.8 percent of the emissions is caused by transportation, so you have to follow suit. So, electric buses are coming.”

Reporter

“But do you believe that Belize’s roads are adequate enough to maintain these buses?”

Rodwell Ferguson

“Electric buses are all over the world, in particular, some of the Caribbean countries already. And so I believe Belize has upgraded their road situation over the last 10 years significantly. So we are prepared for it.”
