Government Official Says Public Officers Are Now Trained in Good Governance
But while the month-long activities are important to help people detect corruption, it is also important to detect it within the public service, which is where a lot of the criticism has come. The minister said that public officers have also begun to receive training in good governance.
Henry Charles Usher, Minister of Public Service
“I think you have to look at what has already been done. The establishment of the Good Governance Unit was a very important step. Why? Because in the past, different agencies, different departments were dealing with different aspects of these conventions or in looking at anti-corruption measures. Having it all centralized in one unit now, that central unit to be able to not only root out corruption measures, but also to look at ways of improving governance, of ways of educating public officers, educating the citizenry. This exercise that we’re going through, this campaign for the next three weeks is a way of educating the citizenry to identify corruption, be willing and empowered to call out corruption. Also, it’s a way for the media to understand that they play a role in exposing, calling out, making sure that corrupt practices are rooted out.”
