PM Says Belmopan Mayor Is Entitled to Her Opinion
Belmopan Mayor, Sheran Palacio went on record recently to criticize the Prime Minister, calling him racist and misogynistic. The criticism came in the midst of an ongoing internal rift between Palacio and the Belmopan City Council, which then led to her and the hierarchy of the People’s United Party. But today the PM did not respond unkindly to Palacio’s comment. In fact, he said she is entitled to her views and that his government has assisted the Belmopan City Council and other councils that have had challenges.
Prime Minister John Briceño
“She’s entitled to her opinion. I think what is important and I think that she missed the point that I was making. I was not speaking about her directly. I was talking that is an embarrassment for the whole behavior of the council. How they’ve been behaving back and forth. These are things that should be dealt with internally, so I want to leave it as that. The other day we had to bail out the Belize City Council. They were short of $100,000. They could not pay their salaries and central government paid them. Central government has been helping in paving streets in Belmopan. We have harmony with all our councils. It doesn’t mean that we will agree with everything, like in every family. If you disagree with your, a member of a family, it doesn’t mean that, you know, you hate one another. It’s, that happens in every family.”
