K.H.M.H. celebrates Belize’s firstborn for 2010
The year 2010 started with bundles of joy for at least five families around the country. News Five today caught up with the first baby born at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital one hour into the morning of January first. Thirty-three year old Yvane Mangar gave birth to her third child, a baby boy, Javion Lashley. Four and a half pound baby Javion was expected on February first, but came one month early. It was not an easy birth and Javion ingested amniotic fluid. The baby is currently in the Intensive Care Unit under observation but his prognosis is good. As is the tradition, the new born was greeted with a generous assortment of baby supplies courtesy of Grace Kennedy Limited. According to Mangar, although this is her third child, the experience is like the first—filled with excitement and love.

“They surprised me. I was wondering why no one was taking me to maternity ward. They had me in labour and delivery until eleven o’clock when they wheeled me in all these people are here waiting with these gifts for me. It was exciting, happy that he was getting so much stuff that helps a lot—pampers that isn’t cheap at this time.”

“At this time, your son is in the special care, the intensive care unit for newborn babies. Why is that?”
Yvane Mangar
“Because of his weight and the four weeks premature and he drank a little bit of the water when my water bag burst. Other than that everything is okay. I spoke to Doctor Grinage and he said that everything is okay. He’s doing good. Today I started to breast feed him and if he does good with that, he goes home in a day or two. It’s exciting. I am just happy that he is here. He is healthy, he’s doing good you know.”
On New Year’s Day, the other four babies born were at the hospitals in Belmopan and the towns of San Ignacio, Corozal and Orange Walk.
