Fortis gives cash donation to Liberty Home for Kids

For the past seven years, Fortis has been recognizing the work of non governmental organizations or others groups who have been making a difference in community life. This year, Fortis’ through its subsidiary, B.E.L., chose the Liberty Foundation as the recipient for a donation of four thousand dollars. Liberty, an orphanage that is home to thirty seven children, has been hit by the financial crunch and has been struggling to make ends meet. According to its Director, the money is timely and will used for shortfalls in salaries.

“We are going to use the money towards paying our staff salary, we have been in arrears and owing the staff some weeks pay and this will help us catch up. Well first of all, people need to know that this year has been very challenging financially. Because of that we have had to cut our staff and many of the way we do things here at Liberty. Because of that our facility—some of the maintenance has gotten a little worn. So we need help with some repairing, we have the building is concrete but we have ceilings that are leaking and peeling. We have doors that need replacing, screens that need replacing. As you walk around the compound you will see that because of the rain we have a lot of water settling down on the ground. So that is one project that we will need to take care of as soon as we can—filling in the grounds and trying to eliminate all the potholes filled with water.”

“They have very critical needs both short term and long term critical needs and so we are very confident that this donation will help them with their operations and very pleased as well that we have the opportunity, Fortis has the opportunity to donate to them.”

According to B.E.L., its employees will he handing over fifty four hampers to needy families. The hampers contain ham, turkey and toys for the children. And on Christmas morning, the B.E.L. staff will serve breakfasts to residents of Sister Cecilia Home for the Elderly, Ramon Parks Shelter and Dorothy Menzies Childcare Center.
