K.H.M.H. pediatric ward gets gifts from Brooklyn Lions Club

Story PictureThere are several organizations trying to spread cheer among those who would otherwise have a blue Christmas. Today the happy recipients were the children at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital’s pediatric ward. The Belize City Leo’s club pays a visit to the pediatric ward every year and the members, who are also children, deliver the gifts. This year, the toys were initially a donation to the Brooklyn New York Lions Club and Mike Soberanis, a member for twenty-five years, decided to share them with the kids at the K.H.M.H. Soberanis lived in the US for about forty years and has returned to support the local Lions Club and its junior counterpart, the Leo’s Club. He toured the pediatric ward today to present the gifts to the children.

“There’s a friend of mine who is the president of—her name is Sandra Peters. She is the president of the F.S.A.D.B., which stands for Friends and Supporters of Anglican Diocese of Belize and she sent us a barrel of toys to me and told me to try and look at where it is needed so we decided to share some. I contacted Ms. Tanya and some came here, some went to the school up in Lucky Strike and we have a few pieces going to Mahogany Heights. This is the first time she did it this year and she’s hoping that I file a report back to her and she can try to do better next year. We hope that we can do it every year because in New York at my club we do it every year at the nursing home and the hospital. One year we had ninety-eight kids in one hospital. We go caroling with them and so. And we hope that as the years go by with my help and Gods blessing we can do a little bit better because the children always need help and need to feel good.”
