Police Officers Receive Training in Evidence Gathering
According to ComPol Williams, the Belize Police Department has been working closely with the United States Embassy in providing training for officers in various capacities, including evidence gathering.
Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police
“Our investigators across the country have undergone a number of trainings in investigation and, again, thanks to the U.S. Embassy who provided this training. These are trainings that are enhancing the police’s ability to be able to interrogate, interview, record statements, and collecting evidence and so forth. It goes a very long way to enhance the skills of our investigators. So they are doing their part and, as part of the investigation process, we have this rapport with the DPP’s office that we’d get them into the picture from an early stage and they advise the police, the investigators what more they need to get done and the police normally ensure that they follow up on the advice. So it’s working well for us. We also have where the use of technology, the surveillance camera system. We have solved a number of murders through our camera systems and we have convicted a number of persons through the camera system. So again, in the coming year, we want to see how we can enhance that effort to be able to have more cameras, not just in Belize City, but we want to be able to expand countrywide.”
