Bailiff Brandon Gillett Out On $10,000 Bail For Gun Charges

Brandon Gillett

You may recall that, just a few days ago, municipal court bailiff Brandon Gillett was remanded to the Belize Central Prison on multiple firearms offenses. The thirty-eight-year-old spent a total of five nights behind bars, including Christmas. However, on Thursday, Gillett was released on ten thousand dollars bail and is spending his second night at home with his family. Gillett was taken into police custody after a video of him wielding a rifle in public and speaking in what was determined to be, a threatening manner to someone, went viral on social media. It was alleged that he had gotten into a verbal disagreement with someone after attending his grandmother’s funeral and that is when the content of the video transpired. That incident was just the beginning of several firearm offenses Gillett would later be charged for, which included five counts altering a firearm without previous permission from the Firearms and Ammunition Control board. Gillett and his attorney, Orson “OJ” Elrington, appeared virtually before Justice Antoinette Moore where the bail application was read. The DPP crown, represented by Crown Counsel, Dercene Staine and Justice Moore granted Gillett bail in the sum of ten thousand dollars and an additional two sureties of five thousand dollars each of which conditions Gillett met. The conditions of his bail are that he must attend all his court adjournments in 2024, not to interfere with any of the prosecution witnesses directly nor indirectly, he cannot be arrested for any offenses whilst on bail and lastly, he is not to leave the country without permission from the High Court.
