Will Government Buy Back B.S.I?

Henry Charles Usher

The impasse has been in the news for several weeks and today on the P.U.P.’s Vibes Radio and T.V., the party’s Chairman, Henry Charles Usher said that the government might have to consider buying back the factory from the investors. We hear first from the Minister of the Public Service, followed by B.S.I.’s response via Communications Director, William Neal.

“You can only make a proper deal that will make sure that the majority of Belizeans benefit. The cane farmers are tired of dealing with this A.S.R Mill, and the time may come that we may have to take back that mill, you know. The time may come, because this industry is for the cane farmers.”

“We just saw a clip of what Minister Usher said, and we hope that he would be able to come and sit with us and have the information to have a more informed position. It’s unfortunate that very often, for political mileage, that might be the route that people may choose to do, to vilify, for example, foreign direct investment, but we feel that we have been very transparent and we have been consistent in terms of what we have been stating from the start of negotiations and we’re open to having a conversation with him to see what informs his view.”
