B.S.C.F.A. Addresses Delivery of Cane by Other Farmers
C.E.O. Alonzo also discussed briefly the delivery of sugarcane by farmers who are not members of the B.S.C.F.A. He also spoke on the idea that was put forward by People’s United Party Chairman Henry Charles Usher to nationalize the mill.
Oscar Alonzo, C.E.O., B.S.C.F.A.
“We are not against the farmers delivering the cane, from any association, but what we are against is that some are delivering and we do not have our commercial agreement signed for us to deliver. That is an injustice, and if you remember in 1949, when the British decided to devalue the Belizean dollar and the uprising of the people in Belize City. This is an uprising, not a violent uprising. This is an uprising of the cane farmers to defend their right to a decent living and a decent income and a fair return to their investment. At this point in time, the way BSI is behaving, you have Social Security Board, use it. They’re investing in productive industry, we are one of the key productive industry. Nationalize it if that can solve the problem. We can run that factory.”
