Corozal Free Zone to Offer Processed Goods Soon
On Thursday, we brought you the ground-breaking and signing ceremony for the access road to the Corozal Free Zone. The portion of road measures two point six kilometres and spans from the foot of the old bridge at the northern border to the entrance of the free zone compound. But aside from boosting the activity that takes place in the free zone, the government is also planning to expand the offerings to now include the light processing of agricultural goods. The Minister of Agriculture, Jose Abelardo Mai, was present at the ground-breaking event and News Five asked him to share those plans with us.
Jose Abelardo Mai, Minister of Agriculture
“Our hope is that we can expand the free zone, not only to be the sale of dry goods, but also, we are thinking of small processing facilities, light processing, we call it. We want to encourage investment in the free zone for Mexicans who can add value to primary products and then export to the CARICOM region. So, that is what I have in view. I have shared my thoughts with the Prime Minister. I believe that with the Tren Maya coming on stream shortly that we will increase – you will see an increased presence in the free zone, and so it opens for opportunities with Mexican people.”
