And while notable enhancements were highlighted within the justice system, one of them is that the Family Court is now housed at the Charles Bartlett Hyde building on Mahogany Street in Belize City. This allows for a more spacious environment for the sensitive cases that are heard within those walls. Attorney-General Sylvestre touched on institutional and infrastructural upgrades at the Magistrate’s and Family Courts.

“The plan is now to have separate pieces of legislation to regulate proceedings in the Magistrate’s Court and the Family Court, respectively – the latter to be a specialised court. Speaking of the Family Court, I can happily report that the Family Court is now housed at the Charles Bartlett Hyde Complex. As my predecessor had reported in her address last year, the hope was to have relocated the Family Court to the Charles Bartlett Hyde Building before the end of 2023. Since October last year, the Family Court, Legal Aid, and the Vital Statistics Unit have been relocated to the Charles Bartlett Hyde Building and in a recent visit to the facilities, the Director of the Family Court commented on how pleased she was with the court’s new home.”
