Police Investigate Rash of Overnight Shootings in Belize City

A spate of shootings in Belize City on Thursday night preceded the murder of Jose Matus and, while investigators haven’t made any connections between those incidents, they are yet to make an arrest in any of those cases.  Assistant Commissioner of Police Hilberto Romero is the Regional Commander of Eastern Division.

“On Thursday, January 11th, 2024, police responded to a shooting incident on Iguana Street.  Upon their arrival, they met one Shemar Smith who had gunshot injuries.  Information revealed that Shemar Smith was walking on Iguana Street when he was approached by a male person who fired several shots at his direction.  Shemar Smith was taken to the KHMH where he was admitted in a stable condition.  Investigation into this matter continues. On Thursday, January 11th, 2024, police responded to a shooting on Antelope Street.  Upon arrival, they found one Joseph Leslie with gunshot injuries.  He was then taken to the KHMH for treatment.  Investigation revealed that Joseph Leslie was walking on the street, on Antelope Street, when someone came and fired several shots towards his direction.  Joseph Leslie is admitted at the KHMH in a stable condition.  We have no suspects at this time.  On Friday, January twelfth, sometime around 3:30 p.m., police responded to a report of a shooting incident on Baymen Avenue.  Upon arrival, they found Shane Nolberto with a gunshot injury.  He was taken to the KHMH for treatment.  Investigation revealed that Shane Nolberto was driving in a vehicle when another vehicle pulled up beside him and a male person from that vehicle fired shots towards his direction, causing injury to him.  Shane Nolberto is at the KHMH in a stable condition.  We are seeking one white pickup truck in regards to this shooting.”
