Sports Monday’s Weekend Sports Review

Goodnight, and welcome to another edition of Sports Monday, I am Paul Lopez. We begin tonight’s coverage with the final match of D’ Gym Basketball Tournament. It was a wet Saturday night in Sugar City. The game started outdoors at the East Sports Center and had to be finished at the Orange Walk Sporting Complex. Here is more from the match between the Northside Bandits and the Mayan Man Warriors.

Paul Lopez, Reporting

Early in the first quarter of this championship matchup, the young phenom, Raheem Thurton hustles to get the rebound from his missed layup. Unable to convert, his teammate Martevious Adams shows size and power under the rim.  Jayden Lopez for the Bandits in transition, powers his way in, draws the foul and banks the bucket. Luis Sosa steps out from under the basket, and finishes the two-point play with a smooth jumper. In the second quarter, Tyrique Dawson works his way around four defenders and swings his body to get the layup inside the paint.  Thurton finds Adams under the rim. Adams makes it look easy. Mayan Man Warriors ended the half with a ten-point lead.

And then, the heavens opened and the rains came pouring. Players and fans scrambled for cover and the game was moved over to the Orange Walk Sporting Complex. At the start of the third quarter, Raheem Thurton bullies his way past three defenders and gets the layup. Francis Arana, from the three point line, makes it look easy. Lopez at the three point line, wide open, he makes it count. Maya Man Warriors went on to win the championship game with seventy points, to the Bandits’ sixty-three points.  Raheem Thurton was named the tournament’s most valuable player, having played thirty-seven minutes and putting up sixteen points in this match.

The William Dawson Peace Cup, birthed out of the William Dawson Basketball Tournament, is on its third week. Six matches were played on Saturday on two separate football fields in Belize City.  Tonight, we bring you highlights of the clash between Hattieville United and West Lake Football Club inside the MCC Grounds. Hattieville United takes first possession of the ball, in this matchup against West Lake FC.  The ball is live.  Alex Henderson from midfield tries to find his striker. That one goes into the hands of the goalkeeper. Seven minutes into the match, Tyrell Rowley in possession of the ball. He gets it off to his teammate Hakeem Smith. There is some confusion at the penalty box. Michael Hernandez on the loose ball, kicks, hits the post and into the keeper’s hands. He is not happy with that performance. Nine minutes in, the ball is in the air.

Travaun Rhaburn goes up for the header. Delroy Andrews goes up with a right foot and hits Rhaburn in the midsection coming down. Rhaburn on the ground and he is clearly in pain.  Thirty-three minutes into the match, Enoch Rhaburn on the right wing, finds Lebron Robinson inside the penalty box. Robinson connects his right foot to the ball and that is the first goal of the match. After ninety minutes of playtime, this one would go to Hattieville United with a score of one to zero.

In national sports news, the Belize Under-Nineteen Male Football Team took on Guatemala over the weekend in the UNCAF FIFA Tournament and suffered an embarrassing defeat.  That match ended six goals to zero in favor of Guatemala. This defeat followed the team’s first loss in the tournament against Costa Rica, last week, seven goals to one. Every weekend the Burrell Boom Road comes alive with some of the country’s most competitive cyclists with the Loans to Go and C Ray Saturday Show.  Here a look at this weekend’s race courtesy Ordonez Bike Shop.

Ten minutes into the Loans to Go and C Ray Saturday Show, Byron Pope and Patrick Williams are on the tail of lead rider, Nigel Alvarado, as they head towards the Boom/Hattieville intersection.  Twenty minutes in, Patrick Williams and Carlton Robinson leading the charge. Brandon Cattouse rides across and increases the speed of the race at the front. Carlton Robinson and Byron Pope sprint for the Belize Central Prison station prize. Robinson would take that one as he continued to set the pace. Making their way back towards the finish line, Byron Pope has broken away from the pack and he is all alone out front. A short distance away from the finish, Byron Pope has been roped in and the race can go to anyone of these four riders. It was a sprint to the finish line. Pope would take that one over Jahiem Lewis by a fraction of a second.

Well folk that is all we have for you in tonight’s coverage of Sports Monday. Catch you in the next one.
