BEBL Transitions to a “Team-Owned” League

The Belize Elite Basketball League is back with its 2024 Season. The first game of the season takes place on Friday night inside the Belize City Civic Center, between last year’s finalists, the Benny‘s Belize Hurricanes and the San Pedro Tiger Sharks. This afternoon, Glen Gill, the league’s newly elected commissioner held a press conference to announce some important changes in the way the tournament will be managed. Among those changes, Gill noted that the BEBL has transitioned to a team-owned league.

“New because this year there has been a huge change in the way business will be conducted. The owners of the team are now the owners of the league. Exciting because new partnerships have been created and there is a vision and a new direction which promises to produce a higher level of basketball in Belize. We have introduced new stakeholders to the league and it is no longer an individual struggle. This affords us to have a smother running of the scheduled games as the finances goes to the league eliminating individual hardship, meeting operational budgets. In the past, each team would go look for sponsor, look for handling their own affairs. This year the teams decided because of the constraints they have with sponsorship and running their own business, they decided to try a new approach; the past approach was not working. The teams decided to pool their resources, so the entire league takes care of expenses during the season. The commissioner’s office will be the ones to oversee what gets paid, for example, players will get paid by the league this year, not the teams. So, because of that we are minimizing cost and cooperating with each much better this year.”
